| “A brief mention of Sunday's Prom, a Beethoven evening with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vanska. Given that it's hard to programme Beethoven unless it's conducted by a specialist, Vanska did very well. His reading of the Ninth Symphony was fluent and extremely sensible, if a bit short on flexibility, spontaneity and cumulative power. But the Triple Concerto before the interval bristled with Beethovenian insight - thanks to an unusually creative partnership with Elisabeth Batiashvili, Steven Osborne and the German cellist Alban Gerhardt, whose probing, lightly-worn musicianship gave an inspirational anchor to the whole performance..” |
