... Alban Gerhardt gave his cd debut and he put together a courageous and diverse program...Gerhardt's ability to bring out the various possibilites of expression of his beautifully sounding Guadagnini cello is striking. The sound is exceptional. This is a release of special interpretative significance. |

Alban Gerhardt already has made a name for himself in Hamburg as soloist of the Hamburg Symphony orchestra as well as in Gerd Albrecht's series "The Philharmonia presents". On this cd he confirms his extraordinary talent immediately with Zoltan Kodaly's solosonata, with its tricky and complicated technical hurdles. He also plays alone a transcription of a violin caprice by Paganini, and in duo with Ya-fei Chuang the Debussy sonata as well in transcriptions Debussy's 'Clair de lune', de Fallas 'Suite populaire espagnole' and Fritz Kreislers 'Tambourin chinois'. Especially exemplaric for Gerhardt's quality of sound is the magical 'Jota'-movement in de Falla's suite. |

The young cellist Alban Gerhardt (born in 1969). He is versatile and enormously talented, plays also the piano outstandingly well. In 1990 he won the Deutsche Musikwettbewerb and played his debut 1991 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations. His first cd sponsored by the German Music Council with pieces by Kodaly, Debussy, DeFalla, Kreisler and Paganini is a really excellent proof of his talent.. |
