Ihr Auftritt hat wirklich einen großen Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen (Sie haben es geschafft, dass ich seitdem meine Übungs-Quantität verdreifacht habe )
Anschließend habe ich mich ein wenig auf Ihrer Website umgesehen und muss sagen, dass es vor allem für Leute meines Alters (bin gerade am Anfang meines Studiums) sehr erfreulich ist, einen klassischen Musiker zu sehen, der trotz solch einer Karriere noch so bodenständig geblieben ist. (Übrigens: der Blog ist eine super Idee) Ich glaube, die Branche braucht mehr Leute wie sie, um das, nun ja, allgemein doch sehr „verstaubte“ Image der „Klassiker“ wieder etwas aufzufrischen.

There’s nothing wrong with deleting offensive comments like some of those that precede this entry. It’s one thing to make a criticism, or express a different opinion, or even to argue with what you write in your blog. These types of comments are usually welcome in most blogs and often provoke interesting discussions.
But when someone writes something that is just personally offensive or insulting without any merit, you should delete it. In my three years of blogging I’ve deleted two or three such comments.

Es wäre daher fantastisch wenn du es Aufnehmen könntest.
Danke für den tollen, klugen Elgar in Dresden! Die Interpretation hat unheimlich zum Verständnis dieses wunderbaren Werkes beigetragen und neue Farben und Aussagen hinzugefügt.

He played it really beautifully and it was a pleasure to get to know the work (not great but….). We will be doing the Kol Nidre and Schelomo with David Cohen later in the year. ich wollte mich für das wundervolle konzert heute in Bremen bedanken. Mein Cellolehrer hat es mir empfohlen und ich bin wirklich froh, dort gewesen zu sein, auch wenn das heißt, das ich (eien 15 Jährige) mit meiner Schwester (einer 9-Jährigen) um 11 Uhr abends noch durch die Straßen tiegern mussten und von anderen Leuten komisch angeschaut zu werden ;D Eigentlich wollte ich irgendwie an Ihre Adresse oder sowas wie eine “fanpostadresse” kommen, aber nun versuche ich hier mein Glück, auch wenn ich wohl kaum eine Antwort erwarten kann geschweige denn ein Gespräch einer seit 6 Jahren praktizierenden Cellistin und eines Weltstars Okay, nochmal vielen Dank!

Thanks for the wonderful concert last night at the Tenerife Auditorium. The Barber Concerto is one of my favourites and you certainly didn’t disappoint me. Your interpretation was wonderful, full of electrifying emotion and power. You had me in tears in the second movement -sublime. You have a way of communicating with the audience and orchestra that’s quite amazing. Jesus Lopez Cobos and you really inspired the orchestra last night, and when you joined ranks with the cellos for the Dvorak 6th Symphony, it was truly great. I thank you for being a fine solist and admire your ability in making music sound so wonderful. Brave Alban.

If you remember we studied together at the University of Cincinnati. I recently bought your CD of the Bach Vth suite, Kodaly, and Britten Solo Sonatas. Wow! An absolute inspiration. I am playing in the Johannesburg Philharmonic, we recently played the Offenbach cello concerto with Jerome Pernoo (too many notes) and he did very well - extremely enthusiastically. März 2008) hat mich sehr berührt - gleichzeitig tieftraurig und überglücklich gemacht. Was für eine unglaubliche Gabe Du hast! Du verpackst urmenschliche Emotionen in Klang und verschenkst Sie mit einer Grosszügig- und Grossherzigkeit an die Menschen, wie ich es noch selten erlebt habe. Danke Dir und Deinem singenden Cello - Ihr habt mich, die ich wie eine “entwurzelte akademische Zigeunerin” weit weg von zuhause lebe, für kurze Zeit sämtliche Begrenzungen und Trennungen vergessen lassen und mir ein Stück vom Himmel gezeigt…

mm, es ist mir ein bisschen komisch, so einfach Alban Dich zu nennen. Wie Herr Lehman (in dem Film). Herr Alban vielleicht. Ich wollte nur Dich nochmal danken, dass Du überhaupt mit uns spielen möchtest, und dabei wir Deine Musik geniessen konnten-, wollte danken die Art und Weise in der Du mit Musik ungehst -und mit Musikern und Musikbusiness-. Das hat ein bisschen geholfen (und Deine Sinfonia Concertante “sehr”). Als ich Dein blog vor zwei Tage zum ersten Mal entdeckt habe, war es mir überraschend. Wie Du mit privat Sachen umgehst. Aber nach ein paar Komentare war positiv überraschend. Ich bin nicht so ein Mensch, der sich überhaupt vorstellt, diese private Gedanken/Gefühle/ Eindrücke offentlich zu machen. Aber Deine Art und Weise haben mich überzeugt. Ich mag ganz gerne, andere Umgänge im Leben (allgemeine) zu begreifen, wenn sie etwas neues frisches echtes geben. Obwohl meine Meinung natürlich total egal ist, vielleicht ist Dir nicht überflüssig zu wissen, dass es jemandem geholfen hat. Ich freue mich sehr, dass ich Dich kennelernen konnte. (es ist lustig, als ich Dich zum ersten Mal gehört habe war vor ca. 3 Jahre, ganz kurz vor meiner Reise nach Deutschland. Ich spielte als Substitutin in dem Orchester (D. Quijote…). Jetzt bin ich vor ganz wenige Tage zurückgekehrt und Du bist zum Gluck wieder da. Das machte ein für mich schwieriger Moment ein bisschen fröhlicher.

I just wanted to say thank you for two things really. One - for introducing me to new works for the cello, and, two - for re-igniting my passion for the cello and music as a whole! I graduated with a degree in music 6 years ago and have found myself struggling to find my way a bit since. However having heard your playing i am happy to say the passion and “fun” of playing has returned to me!!

as a foreigner in Bergen, I decided to take the opportunity to go to “a” concert, just by chance. And I was lucky, I had never heard you play before! Even though I am an (amateur) cellist, I was not familiar with the Prokofiev, and wow it was some piece !
It was quite a different experience from the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), especially these Norwegians not leaving you much of a choice than playing a Zugabe. But thank you so much for that, I was so taken by your interpretation, as though you played especially for me in my living room at home (and probably all the other spectators thought about it that way).

I saw your feature performance with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in January 2007 playing the Elgar cello concerto. I was lucky enough to have gotten a front row seat, almost directly in front of you.
I just wanted to tell you (although I am sure you hear it all the time) how fantastic I thought you were. Absolutely brilliant.
I have played the cello for over 20 years… I used to be an above average player, but no longer have time to practice. Now I just play it for myself when I have spare time.
Hearing/seeing you play really moved me, and I am 1 of your newest/biggest fans.

Finde es manchmal so schade wenn man selber spielt, das man langsam so kritisch wird das man kaum mehr ein Konzert entspannt zuhören kann. Berufskrankheit… Seit ich in der Akademie bin ist es sicher nicht besser geworden.
Aber heute Abend konnte ich ausatmen, du hast mich mit deinem Spiel so getroffen. Ich habe jeden Ton genossen!

hatte. Echte Entdeckungen völlig vergessener Schätze - bis auf den Insidern
eher geläufigen Volkmann. Und der so oft als spröde bezeichnete Schumann,
den ich jetzt in ganz neuem Licht sehe, unabhängig davon, dass die Idee, die
häufig untergehenden (weil vom Orch. zugedeckten) gebrochenen g-moll- und
D-Dur-Akkorde kurz nach Beginn eben nicht legato genommen sind, einfach
genial ist!
Ihr Kodaly etc. steht im Schrank neben Starker und Navarra und hat mich
motiviert, meine “Oma” mal häufiger auszupacken. Meine eigenen Versuche am
op.8 - na ja…
In jedem Fall freue ich mich schon, dass Sie demnächst ein paar Mal in der

Ich habe heute morgen mit Herrn Bröhl gesprochen und er sagte mir dass wir in den nächsten Tagen einige Möglichkeiten sondieren können. Im Hinblick auf den Ende Januar bei FonoForum erscheinenden Artikel mit der Vorschau auf unser kleines Festival 2007 sind wir sehr spät dran. Aber ich bin guter Hoffnung, dass wir eine Lösng finden werden.
Ich selbst werde die Zeit von 17.12. bis zum 6.1. in unserer Wohnung in Freiburg verbringen. Ich denke, dass sich da auf jeden Fall ein Treffen arrangieren läßt.
Congratulations on your website and successful career. I enjoy your sound clips. I met you back in the summer of 1998, when you were playing the Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with a Chamber Music Festival Orchestra in Pennsylvania. I still remember the way you warmed up before a performance…. drawing extremely long and slow sounds out of the A string, like an artist choosing his best colors to paint with. Your interpretations are sincere; your sound is warm and the phrasing very expressive. It’s a delight to listen to you and I find your playing very inspiring. I hope to see you perform again soon.

My wife and I made a very rare trip to the Los Angeles Philharmonic from the northern high desert, having no idea who you were or what we were in store for. I enjoy classical music but I am certainly no connoisseur by any means. To this day my wife and I talk about your performance of Haydn’s cello Concerto in C major. It has left an indilible impression upon both of us, that we will never forget. Watching a Public broadcasting special today 6-17-06 on Dionysus and Apollo reminded us of you and your peformance. heute morgen wurde ich mit einem Artikel des Kölner Stadt-Anzeigers geweckt. Ihre Aktion in der Kreuzgasse(die wohl nicht die erste dieser Art war) hat mir sehr imponiert und mich gleichzeitig etwas neidisch gemacht, da ich selbst hauptberuflich als Gymnasiallehrer in Köln tätig bin und meine Schüler in lockerer Folge für die großartigen Philharmonie-, WDR- und Opernangebote interessieren oder auch (hoffentlich) begeistern kann. Immerhin kann vielleicht der Zeitungsartikel einiges beitragen… Auf jeden Fall heißen Dank für diesen neuerlichen Impuls!!

habe CD mit Dohnanyi und d’Albert erworben und Bericht über Tripelkonzert mit Markus Groh und Julia Fischer gelesen. Gerhard Bauer hat Sie besonders hervorgehoben (ob der überhaupt weiß wie horrent schwer dieser Part ist?); ich selbst hätte Sie(euch - ich bin auch Fan von Julia) gern gehört.
Wie schon mal gemailt: Es geht beim Kritiker um GERHARD Bauer (und nicht um Alwin, der mittlerweile verstorben ist und mein eigener Lehrer an der Kölner Hochschule war). Nichts für ungut - und meiner Bewunderung für Ihre Kunst tut dieser kleine Missgreif keinen Abbruch!

(also because your recordings are like four-leaf clovers in Canada) anyways you should try to have a tour in Canada. Canada could use more performances by young master cellists.:) we shall meet one day i hope.

My husband and I attended your opening night performance with the Boston Symphony last night. When your string broke in the last movement of the Schumann cello concerto we held our breaths — but you were able to play the smaller borrowed cello so beautifully that it was as if nothing had happened! Kenne Lalos Tücken reichlich (aus Kurs bei Navarra) und bewundere Ihre Perfektion - und das als Einspringer (ich denke, dass man nur als "Kollege" Ihre Leistung würdigen kann). Ich lese im übrigen das BBC Music Magazine - und kenne natürlich Ihre Aufnahmen von Dvorak (Järvi) und Brahms (Tortelier). Beide Aufnahmen habe ich ich heute schon für meine Freunde brennen müssen…

Wow!!! Ich bin austauschschuelerin und verbringe gerade ein auslandsjahr in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mit dem Albuquerque Youth Symohony (ich spiele auch Cello) waren wir auf einer kleinen "Konzertreise" in Texas und waren in dem Konzert in fort Worth am Samstag Abend!! Ich kann nur sagen: Wow wow wow wow! Es war soooo great! Das soooo toll gespielte Schostakowitsch-konzert mit einem so hypercoolen Cellisten dazu hat uns Cello-spielende Leute in unserm Orchester dazu veranlasst nach waehrend der Pause und nach dem Konzert noch lange dadrueber zu diskutieren und zu schwaermen…Und wir haben beschlossen unserm ersten Cellisten auch ein "Stirnband" zu besorgen…;-) Gosh it was so great! My son and I heard you play with the Porltand Symphony. My son is a young cellist, 12 years old now and started cello at age 9. He plays with the Porltand Youth Philharmonic–Conservatory Orchestra currently. He is a hard working cellist with a lot of desire to excel. WE were lucky enough to get seats at the symphony close enough for him to watch your hands!!! He was amazed and has since sought out your website and your music. I found the page on the computer and am writing this note. Do you send out autographed photos? I would be delighted to give my son one for a Christmas gift…? My son is equally intersted and skilled in athletics and he was delighted to read your biography and to hear you enjoyed sports also. It is challenging for children since at some point they have to make the choice to give up something. Boris, my son, is very clear that Cello comes first but luckily his athletic coaches–Basketball and baseball–allow him to attend all his cello performaces and not be excluded from his athletics. My son, Brad and I really enjoyed your performance of the Dvorak cello concerto with the NSO last Friday at Wolftrap. You were "thundering" along with the weather that night. What a terrific performance. We also had the pleasure of hearing you play and meeting you after your recital performance at the Kenndy Center Terrace Theater. Your kind words and genuine interest you expressed to my son have inpsired him to continue pursueing the cello with new enthusiasm. Unfortunately, Brad says he wants to be the first "Ozzy Osbourne-like" cellist". Oh well. We look forward to your future performances and hope your beloved cello is returned to you soon and unharmed.

I had the great pleasure of hearing you perform the Dvorak Cello Concerto in Greensboro, North Carolina and have been hoping you would return. Your performance of this piece was the best I have heard, live or recorded. Please tell me how I can get a recording of this. I have your recording of the Sixth Suite for Cello by Bach which I think is outstandingly beautiful. Do you have plans to record the entire Six Suites?

Your performance of the Barber Cello Concerto was wonderful, engaging and a moving musical moment for me. I have recently retired as the founding President and CEO of the National Association of Pastoral Muscians, a membership organization for Roman Catholic Church musicians in the United States. I wish I would have discovered your musicianship before I retired—you have a quality that is rare, but transforming (and transparent). I hope your relationship with Carlos Kalmar with encourage him to bring you to Portland again—and if not, enjoy your conert at WolfTrap. I think you’ll find it a wonderful place to perform.

I was amused reading on your web site about how your father tried to make you play the violin. My husband, a violinist in the Oregon Symphony for 40 years, started our son, John, on the violin at age 3. He "quit" at age 5. When I asked him why he quit he said: "It just makes Roy too nervous." Later, at 7, he rushed into the kitchen one day and said: "Mom, cab I play the cello? I said YES!! He still plays well, but chose a career in international trade. He lives in Munich and I will send him your web page so he can go to your concert in 2003.
In the past 42 years of our marriage I have attended over 1000 concerts. Never have I been so moved by a guest artist. I been moved by a guest artist they way I was tonight.

Letzte Woche las ich in der Zeitung, dass der neue Dirigent der Oregon Symphony Carlos Kalmar dieses Wochenende hier Portland mit dem Orchester einen Auftritt haben wuerde, und als ich weiterlas, erfuhr ich, dass da ein mir bislang unbekannter deutscher Cellist namens Alban Gerhardt das Barber Konzert spielen wuerde. Da ich erstens schon laenger nicht mehr in einem Konzert war, zweitens des Barber Konzert sehr mag (ich kenne es nur von einer Aufnahme von Rafael Wallfisch, aber hab’ mir die bestimmt schon fuenfzig Mal angehoert), drittens ausnahmsweise sogar einmal dienstfrei hatte (ich habe als Emergency Physician oft Spaet- oder Nachtdienst), entschloss ich mich also dazu, heute abend "ins Konzert" zu gehen. Und jetzt bin ich echt total begeistert von der Auffuehrung! Es war wirklich ein musikalischer Hochgenuss, das Barberkonzert live - und so mitreissend gespielt von ihnen - erlebt zu haben. Ich hab’ mir dann die CD gekauft (vielen Dank nochmal fuer’s Autogramm - ich bin sonst an Autogrammen eigeer. Ich sehe keinen Ausweg denke, dass ich es nicht schaffen werde. Alles ist so kompliziert, allein schon die ganzen Formalitäten. Doch immer ist es die Liebe zur Musik, die mich vorrantreibt, die mich aus jeder Krise rettet! Und nur durch diese Überzeugung kann ich weiterleben. Sie hat mich sicher seit meinem 3. Lebensjahr begleitet und ich bin voller Zuversicht, dass sie es bis an mein Lebensende tun wird! I am actually a flautist studying in second year Bmus but play cello as a second instrument. I was inspired by the recording of Dvorak’s concerto with the BBC Philharmonic. Hallo! Deine Homepage ist echt beeindruckend, nicht nur wegen der tollen technischen Umsetzung, sondern wegen des Inhalts. Besonders der persönliche Lebenslauf hat mich zutiefst beeindruckt. Du hast das alles schon geschafft, wovon ich seit Jahren träume, du hast es geschafft dein Leben der Musik zu widmen. Ich stehe noch ganz am Anfang und habe schon soviele Probleme, z.B. den teuren Unterricht zu bezahlen. In drei Jahren werde ich erst mein Abi machen (bin ja erst 15) und trotzdem weiß ich schon jetzt, dass mein Leben der Musik bestimmt ist. Sie ist alles wofür ich lebe und leben werde. Ihr Auftritt hat wirklich einen großen Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen (Sie haben es geschafft, dass ich seitdem meine Übungs-Quantität verdreifacht habe
Anschließend habe ich mich ein wenig auf Ihrer Website umgesehen und muss sagen, dass es vor allem für Leute meines Alters (bin gerade am Anfang meines Studiums) sehr erfreulich ist, einen klassischen Musiker zu sehen, der trotz solch einer Karriere noch so bodenständig geblieben ist. (Übrigens: der Blog ist eine super Idee) Ich glaube, die Branche braucht mehr Leute wie sie, um das, nun ja, allgemein doch sehr „verstaubte“ Image der „Klassiker“ wieder etwas aufzufrischen.

I do know if you are into lots of electronic music, but you should get into contact with this band called Dream Theater they are virtuosi like yourself and you would love playing to their music it would be rythmically, thematically, and technically very fun!

Alban, allow me congratulate you for a very successful and marvelous concert here in Manila. I watched the September 15 concert and I am very grateful that I did. I wasn’t a big fan of cello but you are simply magnificent!
It’s not often that one encounters a talented artist who has a very good sense of humor. My girlfriend and I enjoyed the piano piece you played with Ms. Licad. It was the night before her birthday and your concert made both of us very happy.

Hi Alban,
There’s nothing wrong with deleting offensive comments like some of those that precede this entry. It’s one thing to make a criticism, or express a different opinion, or even to argue with what you write in your blog. These types of comments are usually welcome in most blogs and often provoke interesting discussions.
But when someone writes something that is just personally offensive or insulting without any merit, you should delete it. In my three years of blogging I’ve deleted two or three such comments.

He played it really beautifully and it was a pleasure to get to know the work (not great but….). We will be doing the Kol Nidre and Schelomo with David Cohen later in the year. ich wollte mich für das wundervolle konzert heute in Bremen bedanken. Mein Cellolehrer hat es mir empfohlen und ich bin wirklich froh, dort gewesen zu sein, auch wenn das heißt, das ich (eien 15 Jährige) mit meiner Schwester (einer 9-Jährigen) um 11 Uhr abends noch durch die Straßen tiegern mussten und von anderen Leuten komisch angeschaut zu werden ;D Eigentlich wollte ich irgendwie an Ihre Adresse oder sowas wie eine “fanpostadresse” kommen, aber nun versuche ich hier mein Glück, auch wenn ich wohl kaum eine Antwort erwarten kann

Thanks for the wonderful concert last night at the Tenerife Auditorium. The Barber Concerto is one of my favourites and you certainly didn’t disappoint me. Your interpretation was wonderful, full of electrifying emotion and power. You had me in tears in the second movement -sublime. You have a way of communicating with the audience and orchestra that’s quite amazing. Jesus Lopez Cobos and you really inspired the orchestra last night, and when you joined ranks with the cellos for the Dvorak 6th Symphony, it was truly great. I thank you for being a fine solist and admire your ability in making music sound so wonderful. Brave Alban.

I went to Tokyo last week and I listened your Rococo Variation in Suntory Hall. It was great.
I was in 4th row in front of you. Your Gofriller is big butt and large deeper sound. Of course, I purchase your CD-Shostakovich & Schnittke.
Was the Ancor piece was Moderato of Rostropovich? That’s what I heard.
It was great Russian Dancing piece.

Ich schreibe diese Zeilen aus einem tiefen Bedürfnis heraus. Dein gestriges Spiel (Prokofieff/Bach, NSO, Kennedy Center, Washington D.C., 14. März 2008) hat mich sehr berührt - gleichzeitig tieftraurig und überglücklich gemacht. Was für eine unglaubliche Gabe Du hast! Du verpackst urmenschliche Emotionen in Klang und verschenkst Sie mit einer Grosszügig- und Grossherzigkeit an die Menschen, wie ich es noch selten erlebt habe. Danke Dir und Deinem singenden Cello - Ihr habt mich, die ich wie eine “entwurzelte akademische Zigeunerin” weit weg von zuhause lebe, für kurze Zeit sämtliche Begrenzungen und Trennungen vergessen lassen und mir ein Stück vom Himmel gezeigt…

mm, es ist mir ein bisschen komisch, so einfach Alban Dich zu nennen. Wie Herr Lehman (in dem Film). Herr Alban vielleicht. Ich wollte nur Dich nochmal danken, dass Du überhaupt mit uns spielen möchtest, und dabei wir Deine Musik geniessen konnten-, wollte danken die Art und Weise in der Du mit Musik ungehst -und mit Musikern und Musikbusiness-. Das hat ein bisschen geholfen (und Deine Sinfonia Concertante “sehr”). Als ich Dein blog vor zwei Tage zum ersten Mal entdeckt habe, war es mir überraschend. Wie Du mit privat Sachen umgehst. Aber nach ein paar Komentare war positiv überraschend. Ich bin nicht so ein Mensch, der sich überhaupt vorstellt, diese private Gedanken/Gefühle/ Eindrücke offentlich zu machen. Aber Deine Art und Weise haben mich überzeugt. Ich mag ganz gerne, andere Umgänge im Leben (allgemeine) zu begreifen, wenn sie etwas neues frisches echtes geben. Obwohl meine Meinung natürlich total egal ist, vielleicht ist Dir nicht überflüssig zu wissen, dass es jemandem geholfen hat. Ich freue mich sehr, dass ich Dich kennelernen konnte. (es ist lustig, als ich Dich zum ersten Mal gehört habe war vor ca. 3 Jahre, ganz kurz vor meiner Reise nach Deutschland. Ich spielte als Substitutin in dem Orchester (D. Quijote…). Jetzt bin ich vor ganz wenige Tage zurückgekehrt und Du bist zum Gluck wieder da. Das machte ein für mich schwieriger Moment ein bisschen fröhlicher.

I just wanted to say thank you for two things really. One - for introducing me to new works for the cello, and, two - for re-igniting my passion for the cello and music as a whole! I graduated with a degree in music 6 years ago and have found myself struggling to find my way a bit since. However having heard your playing i am happy to say the passion and “fun” of playing has returned to me!!

as a foreigner in Bergen, I decided to take the opportunity to go to “a” concert, just by chance. And I was lucky, I had never heard you play before! Even though I am an (amateur) cellist, I was not familiar with the Prokofiev, and wow it was some piece !
It was quite a different experience from the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), especially these Norwegians not leaving you much of a choice than playing a Zugabe. But thank you so much for that, I was so taken by your interpretation, as though you played especially for me in my living room at home (and probably all the other spectators thought about it that way).

I saw you and Cecile play a really nice, refreshing and of course interesting concert at Schloss Johannisberg. I was fascinated by the encores you played. The conclusion i would draw is, that i should listen to you, playing one of the big cello concerts.

I saw your feature performance with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in January 2007 playing the Elgar cello concerto. I was lucky enough to have gotten a front row seat, almost directly in front of you.
I just wanted to tell you (although I am sure you hear it all the time) how fantastic I thought you were. Absolutely brilliant.
I have played the cello for over 20 years… I used to be an above average player, but no longer have time to practice. Now I just play it for myself when I have spare time.
Hearing/seeing you play really moved me, and I am 1 of your newest/biggest fans.
Thanks for coming to San Diego, and I will keep an eye out for your return (I hope!).

da ich dich nach dem Konzert nicht mehr gesehen habe, mache ich mal mein debut als gästebuch-schreiberin.
Finde es manchmal so schade wenn man selber spielt, das man langsam so kritisch wird das man kaum mehr ein Konzert entspannt zuhören kann. Berufskrankheit… Seit ich in der Akademie bin ist es sicher nicht besser geworden.
Aber heute Abend konnte ich ausatmen, du hast mich mit deinem Spiel so getroffen. Ich habe jeden Ton genossen!
Du bist ein toller,ehrlicher Musiker. Bitte bleib wie du bist!
Und danke nochmal dafür das du mir damals in Elverum den Floh ins Ohr gesetzt hast, irgendwann bei den Berlinern zu spielen.

Romantic Cello Concertos
Lieber Alban Gerhardt,
ich besitze jetzt auch die Nr.2, nachdem ich im Radio das Interview gehört
hatte. Echte Entdeckungen völlig vergessener Schätze - bis auf den Insidern
eher geläufigen Volkmann. Und der so oft als spröde bezeichnete Schumann,
den ich jetzt in ganz neuem Licht sehe, unabhängig davon, dass die Idee, die
häufig untergehenden (weil vom Orch. zugedeckten) gebrochenen g-moll- und
D-Dur-Akkorde kurz nach Beginn eben nicht legato genommen sind, einfach
genial ist!
Ihr Kodaly etc. steht im Schrank neben Starker und Navarra und hat mich
motiviert, meine “Oma” mal häufiger auszupacken. Meine eigenen Versuche am
op.8 - na ja…
In jedem Fall freue ich mich schon, dass Sie demnächst ein paar Mal in der
Philharmonie gastieren. Die Zeit nehme ich mir dann einfach.

Guten Morgen Herr Gerhardt,
bitte entschuldigen Sie späte Antwort. Vielen Dank für Ihre Zeilen. Ich habe heute morgen mit Herrn Bröhl gesprochen und er sagte mir dass wir in den nächsten Tagen einige Möglichkeiten sondieren können. Im Hinblick auf den Ende Januar bei FonoForum erscheinenden Artikel mit der Vorschau auf unser kleines Festival 2007 sind wir sehr spät dran. Aber ich bin guter Hoffnung, dass wir eine Lösng finden werden.
Ich selbst werde die Zeit von 17.12. bis zum 6.1. in unserer Wohnung in Freiburg verbringen. Ich denke, dass sich da auf jeden Fall ein Treffen arrangieren läßt.

Congratulations on your website and successful career. I enjoy your sound clips. I met you back in the summer of 1998, when you were playing the Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with a Chamber Music Festival Orchestra in Pennsylvania. I still remember the way you warmed up before a performance…. drawing extremely long and slow sounds out of the A string, like an artist choosing his best colors to paint with. Your interpretations are sincere; your sound is warm and the phrasing very expressive. It’s a delight to listen to you and I find your playing very inspiring. I hope to see you perform again soon.

Sehr geehrter Herr Gerhardt,
ich möchte mich bedanken für diesen Abend. Der langsame Satz des Haydn-Konzertes und die Bach-Zugabe haben bei mit Glücksgefühle erzeugt, die ich sonst nur selten (z.B. bei Grigori Sokolovs Schubert oder bei Frank Peter Zimmermann) empfunden habe.

My wife and I made a very rare trip to the Los Angeles Philharmonic from the northern high desert, having no idea who you were or what we were in store for. I enjoy classical music but I am certainly no connoisseur by any means. To this day my wife and I talk about your performance of Haydn’s cello Concerto in C major. It has left an indilible impression upon both of us, that we will never forget. Watching a Public broadcasting special today 6-17-06 on Dionysus and Apollo reminded us of you and your peformance. heute morgen wurde ich mit einem Artikel des Kölner Stadt-Anzeigers geweckt. Ihre Aktion in der Kreuzgasse(die wohl nicht die erste dieser Art war) hat mir sehr imponiert und mich gleichzeitig etwas neidisch gemacht, da ich selbst hauptberuflich als Gymnasiallehrer in Köln tätig bin und meine Schüler in lockerer Folge für die großartigen Philharmonie-, WDR- und Opernangebote interessieren oder auch (hoffentlich) begeistern kann. Immerhin kann vielleicht der Zeitungsartikel einiges beitragen… Auf jeden Fall heißen Dank für diesen neuerlichen Impuls!!

habe CD mit Dohnanyi und d’Albert erworben und Bericht über Tripelkonzert mit Markus Groh und Julia Fischer gelesen. Gerhard Bauer hat Sie besonders hervorgehoben (ob der überhaupt weiß wie horrent schwer dieser Part ist?); ich selbst hätte Sie(euch - ich bin auch Fan von Julia) gern gehört.
Wie schon mal gemailt: Es geht beim Kritiker um GERHARD Bauer (und nicht um Alwin, der mittlerweile verstorben ist und mein eigener Lehrer an der Kölner Hochschule war). Nichts für ungut - und meiner Bewunderung für Ihre Kunst tut dieser kleine Missgreif keinen Abbruch!

My husband and I attended your opening night performance with the Boston Symphony last night. When your string broke in the last movement of the Schumann cello concerto we held our breaths — but you were able to play the smaller borrowed cello so beautifully that it was as if nothing had happened! Lieber Alban Gerhardt, bei der neuerlichen Durchsicht Ihrer Homepage ist mir bei Kritiken - Kölner Stadtanzeiger - ein gewichtiger Fehler aufgefallen: Der Berichterstatter ganz oben (Haydn) von 2004 war GERHARD BAUER (und nicht Alwin, der Solocellist des Kölner RSO und mein Lehrer an der Hochschule gewesen ist, allerdings auch seit einigen Jahren nicht mehr lebt). Vielleicht lässt sich ja dieser Lapsus korrigieren - und natürlich sollten Sie diese Mail nicht ins Gästebuch aufnehmen…

Sehr geehrter Herr Gerhardt oder besser lieber Herr Gerhardt,
habe mir gestern spontan eine Karte für Lalo gekauft und war HINGERISSEN! Als ehemaliger Lehrbeauftragter (1884-2002) kenne ich Sie noch von der MuHo Köln und verfolge natürlich (selbst Cellist) Ihren Weg. Kenne Lalos Tücken reichlich (aus Kurs bei Navarra) und bewundere Ihre Perfektion - und das als Einspringer (ich denke, dass man nur als "Kollege" Ihre Leistung würdigen kann). Ich lese im übrigen das BBC Music Magazine - und kenne natürlich Ihre Aufnahmen von Dvorak (Järvi) und Brahms (Tortelier). Beide Aufnahmen habe ich ich heute schon für meine Freunde brennen müssen…

Wow!!! Ich bin austauschschuelerin und verbringe gerade ein auslandsjahr in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mit dem Albuquerque Youth Symohony (ich spiele auch Cello) waren wir auf einer kleinen "Konzertreise" in Texas und waren in dem Konzert in fort Worth am Samstag Abend!! Ich kann nur sagen: Wow wow wow wow! Es war soooo great! Das soooo toll gespielte Schostakowitsch-konzert mit einem so hypercoolen Cellisten dazu hat uns Cello-spielende Leute in unserm Orchester dazu veranlasst nach waehrend der Pause und nach dem Konzert noch lange dadrueber zu diskutieren und zu schwaermen…Und wir haben beschlossen unserm ersten Cellisten auch ein "Stirnband" zu besorgen…;-) Gosh it was so great! My son and I heard you play with the Porltand Symphony. My son is a young cellist, 12 years old now and started cello at age 9. He plays with the Porltand Youth Philharmonic–Conservatory Orchestra currently. He is a hard working cellist with a lot of desire to excel. WE were lucky enough to get seats at the symphony close enough for him to watch your hands!!! He was amazed and has since sought out your website and your music. I found the page on the computer and am writing this note. Do you send out autographed photos? I would be delighted to give my son one for a Christmas gift…? My son is equally intersted and skilled in athletics and he was delighted to read your biography and to hear you enjoyed sports also. It is challenging for children since at some point they have to make the choice to give up something. Boris, my son, is very clear that Cello comes first but luckily his athletic coaches–Basketball and baseball–allow him to attend all his cello performaces and not be excluded from his athletics. Thank you for visiting Portland, you were an inspiration to us both.

Du hast mich im Inneren erreicht mit Seufzern und Seelengesang… dabei bin ich ziemlich schlechter Laune gewesen: Spät dran waren wir und ich musste deshalb reihenweise graue Häupter und raschelnde Programme zwischen mir und der Musik ertragen… schon nach ein paar Takten war alles selbstvergessener Genuss - und eines der schönsten Konzerte für mich, dass ich nicht vergessen werde. Hi Alban! I saw your concert at Millenium Park a couple weeks ago. I really enjoyed your music. I just started learning the cello in April and you inspired me to practice more! I am kicking myself because I wanted to get your autograph, but I wasn’t sure if it was you in the audience. And it was! I was right behind you, then you ran up onto stage. I am now inspired to listen to Elgar - my cello teacher leant me a CD played by Jacqueline du Pre.

I believe the highlight of our four weeks in Jackson Hole/Teton Village was hearing you perform Kodaly’s "Sonata for Unaccompanied Cello" and the

My son, Brad and I really enjoyed your performance of the Dvorak cello concerto with the NSO last Friday at Wolftrap. You were "thundering" along with the weather that night. What a terrific performance. We also had the pleasure of hearing you play and meeting you after your recital performance at the Kenndy Center Terrace Theater. Your kind words and genuine interest you expressed to my son have inpsired him to continue pursueing the cello with new enthusiasm. Unfortunately, Brad says he wants to be the first "Ozzy Osbourne-like" cellist". Oh well. We look forward to your future performances and hope your beloved cello is returned to you soon and unharmed.

I was amused reading on your web site about how your father tried to make you play the violin. My husband, a violinist in the Oregon Symphony for 40 years, started our son, John, on the violin at age 3. He "quit" at age 5. When I asked him why he quit he said: "It just makes Roy too nervous." Later, at 7, he rushed into the kitchen one day and said: "Mom, cab I play the cello? I said YES!! He still plays well, but chose a career in international trade. He lives in Munich and I will send him your web page so he can go to your concert in 2003.
In the past 42 years of our marriage I have attended over 1000 concerts. Never have I been so moved by a guest artist. I been moved by a guest artist they way I was tonight.

Letzte Woche las ich in der Zeitung, dass der neue Dirigent der Oregon Symphony Carlos Kalmar dieses Wochenende hier Portland mit dem Orchester einen Auftritt haben wuerde, und als ich weiterlas, erfuhr ich, dass da ein mir bislang unbekannter deutscher Cellist namens Alban Gerhardt das Barber Konzert spielen wuerde. Da ich erstens schon laenger nicht mehr in einem Konzert war, zweitens des Barber Konzert sehr mag (ich kenne es nur von einer Aufnahme von Rafael Wallfisch, aber hab’ mir die bestimmt schon fuenfzig Mal angehoert), drittens ausnahmsweise sogar einmal dienstfrei hatte (ich habe als Emergency Physician oft Spaet- oder Nachtdienst), entschloss ich mich also dazu, heute abend "ins Konzert" zu gehen. Und jetzt bin ich echt total begeistert von der Auffuehrung! Es war wirklich ein musikalischer Hochgenuss, das Barberkonzert live - und so mitreissend gespielt von ihnen - erlebt zu haben. Ich hab’ mir dann die CD gekauft (vielen Dank nochmal fuer’s Autogramm - ich bin sonst an Autogrammen eigeer. Ich sehe keinen Ausweg denke, dass ich es nicht schaffen werde. Alles ist so kompliziert, allein schon die ganzen Formalitäten. Doch immer ist es die Liebe zur Musik, die mich vorrantreibt, die mich aus jeder Krise rettet!
Und nur durch diese Überzeugung kann ich weiterleben. Sie hat mich sicher seit meinem 3. Lebensjahr begleitet und ich bin voller Zuversicht, dass sie es bis an mein Lebensende tun wird!

Andrea und ich waren begeistert von Deinem Konzert in Wuppertal. Es war sehr schön Dich und Deine Eltern nach der langen Zeit wiederzusehen. Obwohl ich mir etwas mehr Zeit gewünscht hätte. Wir werden voraussichtlich im Sommer mit unserer Mutter Deine Eltern besuchen. Ein Wiedersehen mit Dir und Deiner Familie wäre schön.

Hi Alban! Vor zwei Wochen haben wir Ihr Konzert in Jersey gesehen und waren ganz imponiert - so unglaublich toll war’s! My older cello-playing brother, James remembers hearing you play the Dvorak at the Proms this year and thought it was a truly amazing performance - legendary stuff! I am actually a flautist studying in second year Bmus but play cello as a second instrument. I was inspired by the recording of Dvorak’s concerto with the BBC Philharmonic. Maybe soon I’ll see you perform live. Lynn Harrell is in South Africa at the moment, I’m going to watch him perform tomorrow night. Hope to see you in South Africa some time soon!

Dear Alban, I am a friend of Steven Osborne’s and my son Paul just called me from France to say he had received a wonderful email from you and suggested that I log on to your website. My husband and I went to hear the Leonard Rose finals for the first time this year,and thought the standard very high, so I am really impressed that you won it in 1993. I had the radio on in the car and heard your exquisite performance of Bach 5 and then Martinu and Beethoven from the Wigmore Hall. At first I thought it was Bijlsma playing Bach…and it was the first time I had heard of you, so I decided to find out more. What a superb cellist you are!

Deine Homepage ist echt beeindruckend, nicht nur wegen der tollen technischen Umsetzung, sondern wegen des Inhalts. Besonders der persönliche Lebenslauf hat mich zutiefst beeindruckt. Du hast das alles schon geschafft, wovon ich seit Jahren träume, du hast es geschafft dein Leben der Musik zu widmen. Ich stehe noch ganz am Anfang und habe schon soviele Probleme, z.B. den teuren Unterricht zu bezahlen. In drei Jahren werde ich erst mein Abi machen (bin ja erst 15) und trotzdem weiß ich schon jetzt, dass mein Leben der Musik bestimmt ist. Sie ist alles wofür ich lebe und leben werde. Ich weiß, dass ich nie etwas anderes tun können werde, als mein Leben, meine Liebe und Leidenschaft - die Musik zum Beruf zu machen, nicht um reich und berühmt zu werden, sondern um ein glückliches und zufriedenes Leben zu leben. Ich bin davon noch soweit entfernt - und ich beneide dich um das, was du schon geschafft hast. Ich bin manchmal so ratlos und weiß nicht mehr weiter. Ich sehe keinen Ausweg denke, dass ich es nicht schaffen werde. Alles ist so kompliziert, allein schon die ganzen Formalitäten. Doch immer ist es die Liebe zur Musik, die mich vorrantreibt, die mich aus jeder Krise rettet!
Und nur durch diese Überzeugung kann ich weiterleben. Sie hat mich sicher seit meinem 3. Lebensjahr begleitet und ich bin voller Zuversicht, dass sie es bis an mein Lebensende tun wird!

I’m an amateur cellist (Immunologist in real life!).I saw you competing in Baltimre at the Leonard Rose cello Competition in 1993.
Also "experienced" your winning performance of the Dvorak cello concerto which was so breathtaking. It has never sounded that beautiful since then. Hope to hear you live again.

Hallo Alban, seit einem guten Jahr schaue ich immer wieder auf deiner Homepage vorbei, da sie mir so sehr gefällt. Ich kenne keinen anderen klassischen Musiker, der da mithalten kann. Und ich surfe wirklich viel! Besonders schön finde ich, dass es deine private page ist und nicht eine von diesen Promotion-Seiten, hinter der letztendlich eine Agentur oder Plattenfirma stehen. Toll, dass du auch deine Tourtermine veröffentlichst. Schade, dass du in den kommenden Monaten bzw. Jahren (oh je!) weder nach Bad Kissingen, noch nach Stuttgart kommen wirst.
